Two Little Raindrops: A Magical Water Cycle Adventure
Two Little Raindrops: A Magical Water Cycle Adventure
Join Adele Lamothe's Two Little Raindrops for a fun story and kids' Q&A about the water cycle, nature, and raindrop adventures with colorful insights.
Introduction
Welcome back to "Kids Ask, Authors Answer," a delightful series where we bring together curious kids and talented children's book authors for a fun and engaging session. In each episode, we have a read aloud of the book, and then children who have read the book in advance have sent in their questions for the author. The author then answers these questions on the spot, without prior knowledge of what the questions are. This creates a spontaneous and often entertaining interaction that reveals more about the creative minds behind beloved children's books. Your kids can join in on the next episode too! There is information on how to participate at the end.
Meet the Authors
Amy Doslich and Samantha (Sam) Howard-Els
The show is hosted by Amy Doslich and Sam Howard-Els, both accomplished children's book authors. Amy Doslich is known for the "Hannah Banana and Mary Berry" series, while Samantha Howard-Els is recognized for her "Mungo" series and "Tiny Boo Halloween" book. Together, they create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere where authors share insights and anecdotes, answering the questions sent in by their young fans.
Adele Lamothe: Nature Lover Turned Author
Adele Lamothe has always been a nature lover, and she has taken that inspiration to write a collection of children's books which currently includes Two Little Raindrops and The Little Seed. These two books comprise her Nature's Little Wonders series. She grew up in South Africa, and she is now living in a quiet town in Canada with her family. Her stories encourage children to pause, look closely, and discover the beauty of the environment around them.
"Two Little Raindrops" introduces us to Splish and Splash, two playful droplets living in a puffy white cloud. Splish, with eyes like a fish, and Splash, sporting a fancy mustache, are best friends who love to play. Their adventure begins when the sky turns dark and the clouds grow heavy, signaling the start of their journey through the water cycle.
As the clouds release their burden, Splish and Splash leap from their cloud home, soaring through the sky and landing on trees with a splishy splash. Their excitement is soon tempered by a longing for family, prompting them to seek a way back home.
Sliding down leaves and hills, the droplets embark on a quest to find water—a stream that will carry them closer to their destination. Their journey is filled with swishes, swooshes, and giggles as they dash over grass and rocks, finally meeting a lively stream that leads to a lake.
After a joyful swim in the lake, the sun emerges, warming the droplets and turning them into vapor. They rise high above the earth, floating past valleys and fields, eventually joining other droplets to form a cloud. Their family is reunited, and the adventure comes full circle as they settle into their cozy cloud beds for a well-deserved rest.
Adele Lamothe’s story cleverly weaves the stages of the water cycle into Splish and Splash’s adventure. The journey begins with precipitation—raindrops falling from clouds. Once on earth, they travel through streams and lakes, and with the sun’s warmth, they evaporate, turning into invisible water vapor. This vapor rises, cools, and condenses to form clouds, where the cycle begins anew.
During the Q&A, children posed insightful questions about the water cycle:
Do raindrops ever dry or are they always wet?
Adele explained that raindrops can become dry when they turn into water vapor, entering an "invisible mode" before returning to the sky.
Can raindrops fall in the same place twice?
Yes! The water cycle is continuous, so the same droplets can return to the same spot after completing their journey.
Why are droplets different colors?
Sunlight passing through droplets acts like a prism, splitting light into a rainbow of colors—a magical explanation for rainbows.
The episode featured a rapid-fire quiz on water cycle terminology, reinforcing concepts like evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, and the formation of clouds. This interactive segment made learning both fun and memorable.
Children’s questions often blend science with imagination, and Adele’s answers embraced this spirit:
Do raindrops use rainbows for slides?
Absolutely! In the world of Splish and Splash, rainbows are jungle gyms in the sky, perfect for sliding and playing.
How do raindrops read books without getting them soggy?
With magical powers, of course! These special droplets can enter imaginary worlds without making a mess.
Do clouds feel soft or wet?
Clouds can be both—sometimes soft and puffy, sometimes wet and splashy, depending on their type.
Do raindrops sing songs inside clouds?
Adele imagined that they do, celebrating nature and their adventures with joyful tunes.
Do raindrops get tickled by the wind?
Yes, whether it’s a gentle breeze or a strong gust, the wind brings laughter and excitement to their journey.
Kids also wondered about the raindrops’ lives beyond science:
Do raindrops go on vacation to the desert?
Sometimes, they take a break from traveling and visit the desert for a change of scenery.
Do raindrops get scared of thunder?
Not at all! They love the thrill of thunderstorms and enjoy twirling down from the clouds.
What do raindrops eat?
Fruits and vegetables, of course—full of vitamins and minerals to fuel their adventures.
Do raindrops go to sleep?
After a long journey, they rest in their cloud beds, ready for another day of exploration.
Adele Lamothe shared that her inspiration for "Two Little Raindrops" came during a rainy day, watching droplets slide down her car windshield. Their playful movement sparked the idea of a journey, which naturally evolved into a story about the water cycle.
Beyond storytelling, Adele emphasized the importance of water conservation. She wanted her book to plant the seed of environmental responsibility in young readers, encouraging them to value and protect our planet’s limited water resources.
Adele’s second book, "The Little Seed," introduces the plant life cycle through the dreams of a tiny seed who longs to fly. This story blends science with an aspirational message: believing in oneself and nurturing big dreams.
Reading stories like "Two Little Raindrops" aloud creates opportunities for discussion. Pause to ask children what they think will happen next, or how they imagine the journey of a raindrop.
Simple experiments—like observing evaporation from a cup of water or creating a mini water cycle in a sealed bag—can reinforce concepts from the story.
Let children’s imaginations run wild. Ask them to invent their own adventures for Splish and Splash, or draw pictures of raindrops sliding down rainbows.
Use the story as a springboard to talk about saving water. Challenge kids to come up with their own water-saving tips and put them into practice at home.
"Two Little Raindrops" exemplifies how storytelling can transform science into a magical journey. By blending fact with fantasy, Adele Lamothe invites children to see the world with wonder, ask questions, and care for the planet. The episode of "Kids Ask Authors Answer" not only entertained but also educated, showing that the best learning happens when curiosity and imagination are given room to grow.
As Adele continues her "Nature’s Little Wonders" series, young readers can look forward to more adventures that celebrate the marvels of our world—one raindrop, one seed, and one question at a time.
Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or young reader, let Splish and Splash inspire you to look at the world with wonder—and to ask the questions that lead to lifelong learning.
Happy reading, and may your imagination run wild!
