Introducing the Mom's Best Reads Award: Celebrating the Best Indie Picture Books of 2024

As a mom, avid reader, and a children's book author myself, I’ve been on the hunt for picture books that stand out. This year, I started a big project of reading, reviewing, and ranking as many indie picture books that I could while still pursuing my own publishing career. I was able to read 178 picture books, each filled with heart, creativity, and dedication. Out of this treasure trove, I’m thrilled to present the Mom's Best Reads Award, an accolade designed to honor the most unique and entertaining indie picture books that I read in 2024.

What Makes Mom's Best Reads Special?

The Mom's Best Reads Award is not your typical book award. Here’s what sets it apart:

Exclusively Indie: Every book considered for this award is independently published. This ensures a spotlight on talented authors and illustrators who often don’t receive the recognition they deserve.
Authentic and Free: Authors do not pay to enter. Some authors generously provide complimentary copies of their books for consideration, but this is entirely optional.
A Mom’s Perspective: The selections are based solely on my personal opinions as a mom, reader, and lover of children’s literature. The books I’ve chosen reflect the qualities I value most in a picture book: creativity, artistic excellence, and sheer entertainment value.

How The Winners Were Picked?

To determine the winners, I focused on three key aspects:

Uniqueness: Does the book bring something fresh to the table? Whether it’s an innovative story, a surprising twist, or a bold theme, originality is essential.
Illustration Quality: Vibrant, engaging, and well-crafted illustrations can elevate a story and capture a child’s imagination.
Entertainment Value: Does the book captivate its young audience? Whether through humor, heartwarming moments, or gripping adventures, it must hold a child’s attention from start to finish.
