Introduction
Welcome back to "Kids Ask, Authors Answer," a delightful series where we bring together curious kids and talented children's book authors for a fun and engaging session. In each episode, we have a read aloud of the book, and then children who have read the book in advance have sent in their questions for the author. The author then answers these questions on the spot, without prior knowledge of what the questions are. This creates a spontaneous and often entertaining interaction that reveals more about the creative minds behind beloved children's books. Your kids can join in on the next episode too! There is information on how to participate at the end.

Victoria Cepeda
Born in San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic, Victoria Cepeda moved to Union City, New Jersey as a teenager. She arrived on a cold, rainy November day in 1985, unable to speak or write English, and still remembers how that chill seemed to settle deep into her Caribbean bones.
As a young girl, she carried a small blackboard everywhere she went, filling it with new vocabulary words discovered in books, magazines, and even her grandmother’s sewing catalogs. Stories like Charlotte’s Web showed her the magic of bonds between animals and children, and today she hopes her own debut book, JJ and Frijolito, will inspire readers in the same way. Now a mother of two sons, she continues to write with gratitude, heart, and a love for storytelling that began long ago.
One of the most compelling aspects of children’s literature is its ability to blend fiction with reality. Victoria, the author of "JJ and Frijolito," shared that her story is deeply rooted in her own family history. The character of Frijolito, the beloved dog, is modeled after her great-grandmother’s pet—a gentle, sweet companion who was a fixture in a bustling household filled with children. By sketching Frijolito to resemble the real dog, Victoria infuses her narrative with authenticity and warmth, making the story resonate with readers who recognize the special bond between humans and animals.
While real-life events and personalities provide a foundation, authors often "doctor" details to enhance entertainment and engagement. Victoria explained that she adapts stories to make them more captivating for young readers, ensuring that the narrative remains accessible and enjoyable while still honoring its roots. This delicate balance allows children to see themselves and their families reflected in the pages, fostering a sense of connection and belonging.
Children’s books are increasingly tackling complex issues, such as neurodiversity, with sensitivity and nuance. JJ, the protagonist of "JJ and Frijolito," is on the autism spectrum, which affects his ability to interpret social cues like facial expressions and jokes. Victoria highlighted that this aspect of JJ’s character is intentional, designed to help readers understand the challenges faced by children with autism. By depicting JJ’s struggles and triumphs, the story encourages empathy and awareness, inviting readers to appreciate the diversity of human experience.
Another poignant theme explored in the episode is Alzheimer’s disease. When a young reader asked why Mrs. Lydia forgets things, Victoria explained that Alzheimer’s affects memory and is common among seniors. She emphasized the importance of discussing aging and illness with children, not only to prepare them for potential experiences within their own families but also to cultivate empathy for others. The narrative reassures young readers that memory loss does not diminish love; rather, it signals a need for care and understanding.
Animals in children’s literature often serve as conduits for empathy and emotional growth. Frijolito, the dog in "JJ and Frijolito" exemplifies this role. When asked if Frijolito was scared after injuring his paw, Victoria revealed that the dog’s primary concern was JJ’s well-being. This selflessness mirrors the central theme of empathy that runs throughout the story, teaching children to consider the feelings and needs of others—even in moments of personal distress.
Children’s curiosity about what animals might say if they could talk is a recurring motif. When prompted to imagine Frijolito’s words, Victoria suggested that the dog would encourage JJ to pursue his dreams and embrace new adventures, while also asking to be included in the fun. This playful exchange underscores the supportive relationship between JJ and Frjiolito, reinforcing the idea that love and companionship can empower individuals to overcome fears and explore the world.
Friendship is a cornerstone of childhood, yet not all children experience it in the same way. In "JJ and Frijolito," JJ does not have a best friend—a deliberate choice by the author to reflect the reality faced by many children on the autism spectrum. Victoria explained that this absence is meant to prompt readers to consider the challenges of forming friendships and to recognize the value of animal companions as sources of comfort and connection.
By depicting JJ’s journey toward friendship, the book encourages readers to empathize with those who may feel isolated or misunderstood. The narrative serves as a gentle reminder that everyone’s social experiences are unique, and that kindness and acceptance can make a profound difference in the lives of others.
The episode featured a rapid-fire quiz on the Dominican Republic and New Jersey, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage in storytelling. Questions ranged from the official language (Spanish) to iconic symbols like palm trees and boardwalk carousels. This playful segment not only educated young viewers about geography and traditions but also underscored the value of diverse backgrounds in shaping narratives.
Victoria’s stories are infused with elements from her Caribbean upbringing, such as the legendary flying cockroach—a creature both feared and revered in Dominican folklore. By weaving these details into her books, she creates a rich, immersive world that invites readers to explore new cultures and perspectives.
Responsibility is a recurring theme in children’s literature, often manifested through chores and household duties. When asked why JJ has to do so many chores, Victoria emphasized the importance of helping parents and earning privileges like gaming time. This message reinforces the idea that contributing to the family unit is a collective effort, and that happiness is often linked to cooperation and mutual support.
Perhaps the most touching moment in the episode came when a child asked why JJ feels like he has superpowers when his mother expresses her love. Victoria explained that unconditional love empowers individuals, giving them the confidence to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles. This sentiment resonates deeply, reminding readers that emotional support from family can be a source of strength and resilience.
Children’s aspirations are as varied as their imaginations. JJ’s dream destination is Japan, inspired by his love of gaming—a nod to the country’s vibrant gaming culture. In addition to virtual adventures, JJ is passionate about basketball, balancing online play with real-life sports. This duality reflects the modern child’s experience, where digital and physical worlds intersect, and highlights the importance of balance and active engagement.
Play is central to childhood development, whether through sports, games, or imaginative exploration. By showcasing JJ’s interests, the story encourages readers to pursue their own passions and to find joy in both solitary and social activities.
Authors often embed personal touches and hidden details in their stories, creating layers of meaning for attentive readers. Victoria shared that the bunny lamp in her book is a tribute to her childhood pet—a subtle nod that delighted one young reader who spotted it. These Easter eggs foster a sense of discovery and reward curiosity, inviting children to engage more deeply with the text.
The episode concluded with an invitation for children to contribute ideas and feedback, reinforcing the collaborative nature of storytelling. By soliciting suggestions for character names and future plotlines, Victoria empowers young readers to become active participants in the creative process, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in the narrative. A thoughtful question about what happens to pets when their owners are unable to care for them prompted a discussion about animal shelters and the hope for loving new families. Victoria acknowledged the uncertainty that sometimes accompanies these situations but encouraged readers to focus on the possibility of positive outcomes. This conversation highlights the importance of compassion and responsibility in caring for animals.
The story also addresses the importance of safety, particularly when crossing the street. JJ’s excitement upon seeing Frijolito leads to a moment of tunnel vision, reminding readers to remain vigilant and cautious in everyday situations. These practical lessons are woven seamlessly into the narrative, providing valuable guidance without detracting from the story’s emotional core.
Victoria shared her plans for future books, including a sequel to "JJ and Frijolito" and a Christmas story for younger readers. The latter focuses on valuing relationships over material gifts, reinforcing the themes of empathy and gratitude that permeate her work. By continuing to explore diverse topics and age groups, Victoria demonstrates a commitment to nurturing young minds and hearts through literature.
The episode emphasized the importance of community, inviting children to share their thoughts and experiences through reviews and recommendations. This open dialogue fosters a sense of belonging and encourages readers to see themselves as co-creators in the literary world.
The "Kids Ask Authors" episode offers a compelling glimpse into the world of children’s literature, where stories are shaped by real-life experiences, cultural heritage, and the boundless curiosity of young readers. Through thoughtful answers and engaging anecdotes, the authors demonstrate the importance of empathy, diversity, and adventure in nurturing the next generation.
By addressing complex topics with sensitivity, celebrating individuality, and inviting reader participation, children’s books become more than mere entertainment—they become tools for understanding, growth, and connection. As authors like Victoria continue to craft stories that reflect the realities and dreams of their readers, the world of children’s literature remains a beacon of hope, imagination, and possibility.
Whether you’re a parent, educator, or young reader, the lessons from "Kids Ask Authors" remind us all of the enduring power of stories to inspire, comfort, and unite. Through empathy, adventure, and a celebration of diversity, children’s literature continues to shape hearts and minds, one question—and one answer—at a time.
